As a collective, we seek to recreate and channel the energy, both positive and negative, that has transformed our lives and influenced those who came before us. Our art aims to forge a space to share fragments of our people’s hxstory by grounding our own experiences within narratives that linguistically invoke the sense of “Otherness” that is countered by oral histories and resistance, and honored through art. We came together as a group because through art we have individually found love, healing, energy, and transformation. Through collaboration and decolonization, we rediscovered the resilience that enables us to dare greatly and reclaim what was lost, stolen, forgotten, or silenced through our art.
MONICA GUTTIEREZ
|
My name is Monica Gutierrez. Born and raised in Bakersfield, and currently studying at University of California, Berkeley.
My art is drawn towards color combination, abstract expression, and photography. I enjoy findings ways to combine realistic items and render them unrealistically. I am just starting out as an artist, and very excited to see where the direction of my art goes. My mentality is, painting and photographs is my art, art gives me wings, it is a personal entirety I call my own to describe the feeling and emotions I call my own, it is a personal look at the little girl, the young woman, and the mujar that continues to grow and develop. It is a part of who I am. It is the wings that allow me to fly... How do I show everything that is felt, every emotion that is lived, every moment that is….. how do I begin? |
VICTORIA AYALA
|
My name is Victoria Ayala, I am from Watts, California. I am currently living in Oakland, California. I earned my B.A. in Art Practice from U.C. Berkeley (2014).
As an artist I have always sought to capture the raw essence of my subject matter. Whether it be the soul, charisma, personality, energy or emotion of someone or something, I seek to make these intangible characteristics visible through emphasized features, color scheme, and echoed lines. |
EMMANUEL FLORES
|
My name is Emmanuel Flores, from Inglewood, CA; 1st generation with parents from Juchipila and Guadalajara. Currently in the East Bay, earning a degree in Chicano Studies and Art Practice.
My art practice is a meditation of the simultaneity of realities in my own lived experience, and the experiences of family, and community. Through painting, film, animation, and graphic design, I often seek to explore my own anxieties, by creating visual, sonic, and physical experiences which places viewers into my thought, and into my process. |
